RE: Officer Involved shooting in Eureka, Kansas of Kevin Welsh
Last night at approximately 9:30 p.m., as part of an extensive manhunt for Kevin Welsh,
wanted for two counts of 1st degree murder and attempted 1stdegree murder, agents of the
Kansas Bureau of Investigation were investigating a building near 8th and Poplar in
Eureka, Kansas. A passing law enforcement officer had noticed the entrance to the
unoccupied structure was tampered with from the last time it had been checked.
Agents contacted the owner of the building and obtained consent to conduct a search.
Initial information indicates KBI Agents clearing the building encountered Welsh, who
pointed a handgun at the agents, causing the agents to engage with lethal force. Welsh
was shot by the agents, provided first aide and then transported to a local hospital
where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10:00 p.m.
In accordance with KBI policy, a thorough investigation of the incident is being
conducted including crime scene investigation, autopsy and interviews of witnesses.
The Greenwood county Attorney, Joe Lee, will appoint a special prosecutor to review
the investigation. Once the investigation is completed additional information will be

TOPEKA — (October 15, 2013) — The Office of Attorney General Derek Schmidt today issued the following statement regarding events last night in Greenwood County:
“Last night law enforcement searched several locations in Eureka, Kansas, seeking suspect Kevin Robert Welsh. Welsh was not located. Welsh is believed to be in Eureka or close proximity. He is considered armed. Governor Brownback has authorized a $5,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of Kevin Robert Welsh. Any person with information is asked to call 911 or (800) KS-CRIME.”

UPDATE: The latest press release from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.
The 2007 Ford Explorer, which law enforcement was seeking in connection with a shooting that occurred outside Eureka, KS, yesterday evening, was found abandoned in eastern Greenwood County, earlier this morning. The shooting killed a 54-year old man and a 52-year old woman; and seriously injured a 26-year old woman. The suspect, Kevin R. Welsh (35), is still on the run and considered armed and very dangerous. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, along with numerous other agencies from southeastern Kansas, are still actively searching for Welsh. The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that has left two dead and one person critically injured.
It began around 7:25 p.m. Wednesday when deputies were dispatched to the report of a burglary at home, located at 1575 130th in Eureka. When they arrived, they found two people who had been shot to death and a third victim who had been critically injured.
She was flown by Lifeteam helicopter to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. Her current condition is unknown. The victims names have not been released until family has been notified.
Authorities are searching 35-year-old Kevin Welsh of Toronto. Welsh is believed to be armed with an AR-15 rifle.
He is driving a gold Ford Explorer with a veterans tag of 20AXY.
